- A hernia is when intestines go through an opening they aren't supposed to. This can happen for a number of reasons - a weak abdominal wall, an open canal that should be closed, they can even go through old c-section scars. Hernias usually aren't an acute problem, unless the bowel or fat becomes strangulated....and then you have to go to surgery for five hours ;)
- Hyperekplexia literally means exaggerated surprise. It's a neurologic disorder where a stimulus causes a greater than expected response. Here's a short video of a man living with this disorder.
- There are many types of headaches - from stress headaches to migraines to cluster headaches. Cluster headaches often occur more in men, on one side of the head, and come on in short bursts in a shorter amount of time. One of the main treatments for these headaches is oxygen, but sometimes they can't be treated, so they have the colloquial term of "suicide headaches".

- This floral skirt is seriously gorgeous. I love the way they paired it with the striped top!
- I have always wanted a black maxi dress but they are all either too short or strapless. This one is inexpensive, comes in talls and has straps and now I want it.
- A scalloped, gold, and cognac watch. Too perfect.

- Well, I have officially survived my first week of surgery...only 7 more weeks to go! This week was actually not bad at all because on Monday we had orientation, on Tuesday we had a lecture day, Wednesday was my 14 hour day in surgery, Thursday was only 5 hours since there were only 2 scheduled procedures, and we got Friday off. This coming week is going to be a doozy though and I'm already so nervous.
- We spent yesterday afternoon in Pittsburgh going to the Pirates vs Indians game, and then dinner with two of our classmates. We're all so much more social and happy now that boards are over, and it's so nice to just be able to spend time together without feeling guilty about not studying.
- After five years, Baer has finally discovered that he hates fireworks, and he spent the entire weekend sitting in our laps as often as he could. Luckily for him, no more fireworks for a while ;)
